Things I missed while I was studying for a test I was doomed to fail

I missed a couple of things last week that I wanted to give mention.

For instance, Talk Like a Pirate day went by again without proper celebration on my part. Could I possibly suck more?

More importantly, I missed the Jena 6 virtual march. Well, I will still try to participate and post about it.

In fact, I'm kind of sick of blogging about stupid shit like intra-feminist blogwars while all sorts of shit around the world is happening. So let's see what happens with that sentiment on my part.

I too missed TLAP Day. :-( Is the one holiday that I actually hold affection for, too.

Did manage to make the Virtual March, which takes precedence in the broader scheme of things, but still...

I too struggle with whether what I'm doing is simply adding to the interwebby circle jerk, or making a real difference. Suppose is like any subculture--one can easily lose sight of the broader community beyond the limited electronic borders (so much of it seems self-imposed, too - self-limited by apathy, or indifference).

There are things more important than getting hits, or provoking 100+comment threads; as you said in another post, it gets really disheartening when relatively 'trivial' matters (please note the 'relatively' qualifier) engender strong passions; what does it take to arouse empathy, even if the experiences of the so-called 'other' seem, on the surface, a million miles away from the average contemporary North American bourgeoisie? Obviously the capacity exists; is just being misused, or are we writers not giving our all - again, out of indifference, or because we're just not up to take on the responsibility? Because having a platform, an audience does bring a level of responsibility with it; easier said than done, of course, when you've spent 9 hrs at your so-called 'day job' dealing with even more relatively trivial matters that seem less trivial in the immediate sense, considering ones paycheque is at stake, and all you really want to do is catch up on the latest tune the fiddler is playing while Rome burns. Maybe we here in the west are content to be a nation of spectators, treating real goddamn life like a TV show; the expansion of the fourth wall.

Am thinking out loud (or in text, rather - this is not a pipe, and all that) and not making much sense, even to myself.

Regardless, I find if you're looking for subjects to tackle outside of the circular 'mainstream', Feminist Peace Network is a great place to discover important feminist issues off the beaten (bourgeois) path; LabourStart is a valuable resource for trade union-related news and action alerts, too. FPN in particular is loaded with links to global feminist groups who are in need of solidarity, such as The Organization for Women's Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), which ALSO badly needs cash atm.

Dunno. This shit seems best kept to email. hit me up if you feel like musemusepondering in a less public venue - matttbastard-at-gmail-dot-com
