Life in liberated Iraq

Via Bob Harris at This Modern World I read that Iraqis in Baghdad are going so hungry that they are stealing zoo animals for food.

Looters stole zoo animals to eat, sell: animal rights group
June 17 2003
The number of animals at the Baghdad zoo has shrunk from 400 before the war to only 50, largely because looters stole them to eat or sell, a US-based animal rights group said today.

Holy stinking crap. Let's put aside the fact that this is incredibly sad for those poor wild animals. These people must be in a very desparate situation. Getting these people food and water should have been our first priority. Now, Iraq could begin exporting oil again any day now, but the people are so desperate all they have to eat is zoo tiger?

Am I the only one that thinks that's a little out-of-order? Will stories like the baby-eating in North Korea start to come out of Iraq, too?
